Meet Sir--he is the definition of ecstatic energy. He is a seven-year-old you can count on to express overwhelming happiness and joyful excitement any day of the week, any hour of the day. He commands full attention in any and every environment.
Meet Jaqualyn--a six-year-old, soft spoken and intentional. Wisdom grown from experience lies behind his dark brown eyes, and there is a certain power in his deep, confident voice.
Summer 2019, and these two clashed in the early weeks. The space they filled became packed with personality, and summer camp was an emotional wrestling match for Sir and Jaqualyn. Their counselor, Miss Marissa, explains that their trouble was what eventually brought them together. Both boys were often misunderstood due to behavioral challenges, both were fighting to find a place for their boldness, and the Lord pushed them together. Marissa was there to nudge them close with thoughtful, assigned seats when the two o’clock tears and tantrums crept in, and the friendship became a “come as you are” safe place for the two. Jaqualyn’s head of soft curls and Sir’s mischievous belly laugh became a dynamic duo, and a clash turned into a brotherhood.
Here’s the truth: Psalms says Jesus is “close to the brokenhearted” and “saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Just like we have the opportunity to be so near to Jesus in the toil, the hustle, the striving, the battle, the tribulation, the ache, the rough place, and the displacement--friends can find each other there.
